Cclxxxiii. the Estimation of Vitamin B1 in Blood

چکیده
MEIKLEJOHN [1937] has described a method, based upon the work of Schopfer [1935], of estimating vitamin B1 in "small samples" (15 ml.) of blood. From his evidence he concludes "that the method... provides a quantitative estimate of the true vitamin B1 content of the blood". Since a clinical test for vitamin B1 in blood is badly needed, and since Meiklejohn's method is being used by several workers in this country and in others, it seemed to be important to examine the justification of his claim and the value of the test. The basis of the method lies in the ability of vitamin B1 to promote the growth of a fungus, Phycomyces blakesleeanus. There is already sufficient evidence contained in Meiklejohn's paper and in Schopfer's numerous publications to show that the former's claim needs investigation. Schopfer & Jung [1937, 2] have published tentative conclusions: "Le sang donne une r6action positive. En exprimant en aneurine la totalit6 de l'action auxog6ne observee, on arriverait A des teneurs variant entre 0-2 et 04y par cm.3 de s6rum." The animal used is not mentioned. He then warns us of the danger of expressing all growth-promoting activity in terms of vitamin B1, since "nous savons que d'autres facteurs agissent egalement". Although results on two rats hardly merit discussion, it is instructive to examine the only experimental results that he has published (presumably obtained with the male rat): Approx. value for apparent Dry wt. of vitamin B1 (y/100 ml.) Rat serum fungus calculated from Schopfer's vol. in ml. mg. figures 0*5 34 17 1.0 39 10 2.0 47 6-5 Rat red blood 77 15 corpuscles "about 2 ml."

A Comparison of the Effects of Vitamin E and Vitamin B1 on the Severity and Duration of Pain in Primary Dysmenorrhea
Background and aim: Primary dysmenorrhea is defined as painful menstruation in the absence of any confirmed pelvic disease. Its incidence has been estimated between 50-90% in different communities. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and contraceptives are usually prescribed for the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea; however, they cause several specific complications. Due to the impo...
متن کاملCclxxxiii. the Influence of the Length of the Test Period on the Accuracy Obtainable in a Vitamin B1 Test
IT was shown by Coward [1933] that the accuracy obtainable in a vitamin A test by the "increase in weight" method was increased very little by prolonging the test period beyond three weeks. Since then, enough results of vitamin B1 determinations by the method of the "increase in weight" of rats have been accumulated to make it possible to carry out a similarexamination ofthe duration of a vitam...
متن کاملAntioxidant effect of different vitamins on methemoglobin production: An in vitro study
Nitrite intoxication occurs frequently in ruminants and equines. The most common treatment of this disorder is administration of 1% methylene blue, although the use of some antioxidant agents e.g. vitamins and complementary treatment may also be useful. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antioxidative effects of some vitamins on methemoglobinemia induced by sodium nitrite. For t...

Ameliorative potential of antioxidants –vitamins C and E on blood profile of Clarias gariepinus fed diets contaminated with varied levels of fumonisin B1 (FB1) was evaluated. Fusarium cultured maize containing FB1 were used to formulate diets containing approximately 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 mg FB1/kg constituting diets 2, 3, and 4, respectively and other nine diets constituting Diets 5 - 13 with the ...
متن کاملLong-Term Treatment by Vitamin B1 and Reduction of Serum Proinflammatory Cytokines, Hyperalgesia, and Paw Edema in Adjuvant-Induced Arthritis
Introduction: Immune system is involved in the etiology and pathophysiology of inflammation and vitamins are important sources of substances inducing nonspecific immunomodulatory effects. Given the proinflammatory role of cytokines in the inflammation and pain induction, this study aimed to assess the effects of long-term administration of vitamin B1 on the proinflammatory cytokines, edema, and...
